Eight Ways to Build your Work at Home Business
You may have a great idea on how to work from home, but do you know how to really build your business? Do you have what it takes to not only make your idea known, but to entice clients to become repeat customers? Here are eight ways to build your business:
Learn to juggle a full time job with your business. It is unwise to quit your job as soon as the inspiration to work from home hits you. It is even less wise to do so if you have a family to support. Instead, gradually ease yourself into your home business. See if your idea catches on, and if you suddenly find yourself able to reduce your work hours to part time. If your home business picks up quickly from there, you are on the road to freedom from “the Man” and will soon be able to let go of your regular employment situation altogether. Building a business takes time, and if you have creditors closing in on you, you will not be able to give yourself the time your business may need to take off and soar.
Involve your family or friends. While you time and again hear the story of the lone entrepreneur who started a computer business in his basement and only a month later was fortunate enough to rake in thousands of dollars, you do not usually hear about the thousands of lone entrepreneurs who crash and fail because they are trying to do too much by themselves. For example, if your business involves a lot of licensing requirements, you will be wise to farm out this end of the business to a friend or family member, or even a professional who can make sure it is done right while you concentrate on growing your business. The same can be said for accounting, tax filings, and even record keeping. Perhaps someone in your circle of friends or within your family will be willing to help out, thus giving you the time and space you need to continue on with your work.
Networking is everything. Attend trade shows, speak to people in the business, have business cards printed, set up a website, and get your name out there. Too many home business owners make the mistake of skimping and saving when it comes to such advertisements, and the results are generic business cards that carry another company’s logo on the back, and websites that look like an amateur put them together.
Think of new way to promoting your business. Everyone can put an ad in the paper or hand out flyers, but how many people think of dressing themselves or their little kids up in cute costumes to hand out flyers and coupons? You may even enlist the help of a properly trained family pet to enhance the “cuteness” factor and get into conversations with potentials customers and clients.
Stay on top of developments in your area of business. Is there a new way to do business? Is there a better doggie cookie out there that is all the rage? Are there new tax laws that home based accountants need to know of? Make sure you are the first to know, and then display that knowledge in your home business. Nothing will drive you out of business faster than being behind the times with respect to products, laws, and customer trends.
Make sure you are in compliance with federal and local laws. You will not be able to grow your home business if the zoning board could shut you down at a moment’s notice. Similarly, if you suddenly find yourself face to face with the health inspector who will want to take a look at the kitchen of your home based catering business, you need to know that all is well, otherwise you will not only find yourself closed down, but you may even have to pay some hefty fines.
Grow your home business by reducing your personal liabilities. Do not live in the fear of being sued by a disgruntled client, but instead incorporate your business and limit your own liability while also taking advantage of a preferred tax filing status.
Last but not least, be sure to get enough start-up financing to get the business of the ground. Nothing is more frustrating than to have a great idea but be limited in what you can achieve by your limits of capital. To do this, you must be realistic about your business’ needs and also about what it takes to market it professionally. Then be prepared to speak to many lenders and make your case. You need to be knowledgeable about your business, show your compliance with state and local laws, and overall radiate a confidence that you will make it.
